Picture James reading and you will see a man with a historical text book in his hand. He liked nothing more than researching a commissioned painting on an area of history that stretches his knowledge. Over the years he gained respect for his underpinning knowledge and eye for detail when portraying points in history.
Much of this came from his years as an illustrator of educational books on various topics. Early works being Samurai Warriors, working with author Steve Turnbull and Warriors of Rome with Michael Simkins. These led to working on hundreds of books on Palaeontology, Pre-history, UK and World History, there are few topics he hadn’t touched.
James also worked with museums producing dioramas and models for displays. He even produced a scale model of The Smalls Lighthouse for a Welsh television company.
