Cortes takes Tenochtitlan 1520
A scene from the final assault into the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan by the Conquistadors under Hernan Cortes. Having suffered previously by Aztec troops in canoes while traversing the causeways that crossed the lake to the city, Cortes had built several 'brigantines' armed with canon. They proved to be very worthwhile as they could support the main army on the causeway whenever it was needed. Cortes is seen leading his soldiers and Tlaxcalan allies towards the island capital in the final battle for the capital. Battle of Kadesh 1274BC
The initial assault by the heavy chariots of the Hittite army had broken the Amun division of the Egyptian army but they lost focus and began to look at plundering the Pharaohs private encampment. At this point, as seen in the painting, Ramses II led his lighter and more agile chariots troops in a wide arc from behind his Sherden bodyguards and plunged into the side of the disorganised Hittites. Killing men and horses without discrimination, by using their powerful bows, they turned the tide of the battle. It was now the Hittites who were in disarray and needed assistance from their King, Muwatalli, to extricate themslves. In the end both sides claimed victory but Kadesh remained under Hittite control. Burning of the Egyptian Fleet in Alexandria Harbour 47AD
Part of the Siege of Alexandria was the burning of the Egyptian fleet of war galleys by Caesar and Cleopatra's troops. In this scene we are looking down onto the Eastern end of the port with the Royal Quarter of the city directly in front of the viewer. Caesar and Cleopatra held the Royal Quarter and had erected barricades in the streets to keep out the Egyptian forces firstly led by Arsinoe IV and later Ptolemy XIII. The siege was finally lifted and Ptolemy's army defeated in a pitch battle on the west side of the river Nile. ISHTAR GATE
The fabulous Ishtar Gate in Babylon around the time of Nebuchadnezzar II in the early part of the sixth century BC. The king in his war chariot heads out of the city down the Processional Way. The blue, lapis-lazuli glazed bricks would have shone out from the mundane mud bricks that most of the city would have been made from. The Gate was further decorated with alternating rows of dragons and aurochs while the Processional way was lined with lions. J. G. PARRY-THOMAS & BABS AT PENDINE 1926
These two paintings show John Godfrey Parry-Thomas breaking the Land Speed Record over two days in April 1926. On the first day Tuesday 27th he raised the record to 168.074 mph for the mile (169.238 for the kilometre) but went out again on the Wednesday to raise the speeds to 170.624 mph for the mile (171.09 for the kilometre). Believing ‘Babs’ could achieve more, Parry-Thomas returned the next year having made several improvements, most notably to the bodywork. With rumours of Segrave's 1000hp Sunbeam about to break the 200mph record, Parry-Thomas made a hurried attempt to improve his own record in March 1927. It was to be a fatal decision; still suffering the effects of 'flu and travelling at full speed the car crashed and Parry-Thomas was killed instantly. This is all people tend to know about Parry-Thomas; what is generally forgotten is that he was an outstanding engineer, successful racing driver, and broke many driving records. As an engineer he designed aero engines in the First World War, a transmission gear years ahead of its time, and as Chief Engineer for Leyland was responsible for the Leyland Eight. He not only successfully designed, built and raced his own cars but drove equally well with those owned by others. As well as winning many races he broke numerous records including well over thirty World records.
