It is often thought that we know very little about any particular species of Dinosaur and that anything goes when it comes to creating reconstructive images. However, this is not so in a great many cases; often the whole skeleton is known and occasionally soft tissues are fossilised, and there are many examples of skin impressions. While we know that some species had various superficial adornments, including the now well documented feathered varieties, it is often taken too far. Likewise, we do not know the colour of many of the Dinosaurs or their contemporaries but by studying modern faunas we can guess that few, if any, were very garish, as just about all would find it necessary to hide from their predators or their prey. So the general rules in James’ paintings are; the known skeleton should fit inside the skin; adornments are kept in check; colours and patterns should fit the landscape and lifestyle and with just the occasional bit of flamboyance for artistic drama.

AGUJACERATOPS
This scene is based on the fossils of the Aguja Formation in Texas, from the late Cretaceous. The herd of Agujaceratops (Aguja-horned-face) crossing the river, are members of the Triceratops family of horned Dinosaurs. Their crossing is made more perilous by the presence of the enormous Deinosuchus crocodiles. BENNETTITALE
AND COMPSOGNATHUS Two possible prey animals seek sanctuary from the tiny meat-eating Dinosaur Compsognathus (pretty-jaw), on a Bennettitale. About the size of a big chicken, Compsognathus was still a voracious hunter of small prey such as early mammals and lizards. The Bennettitales were related to the Cycads but became extinct towards the end of the Cretaceous. CARNOTAURUS
A most unusual South American Theropod from the Late Cretaceous, Carnotaurus (flesh-bull) has a very deep short skull with pronounced horns over each eye. Its arms were also remarkably short and stubby with four-fingered hands. Skin impressions show that Carnotaurus was covered with bony nodules surrounded by rough skin with large folds around the neck. COELOPHYSIS
In the Late Triassic of what is now New Mexico the sun shines through the canopy of Ginkgos and conifers onto the fern covered forest floor. A stream cuts its way through the moss covered rock while the Coelophysis (hollow-form) hunt for food. DASPLETOSAURUS
AND PTERANODON Imagine you are a tiny mammal in Alberta, Canada during the Late Cretaceous. The ground trembles and then a shadow passes over you. You look up. Not one huge predator but two; the earth shaker is Daspletosaurus (frightful-lizard) a smaller and earlier relative of Tyrannosaurus (tyrant lizard), in the sky Pteranodon (wing-without-teeth) glides by on wings that could grow up to 9 meters (30 feet) across. Pteranodon was one of the last and largest of all the pterosaurs. MEDIUM: Acrylic on canvas board ORIGINAL PAINTING: £2500.00 3353x1676mm (132x66ins) GICLEE PRINTS are available in various sizes. DEINONYCHUS
Small by Dinosaur standards, 3.5feet (1m) high and 10feet (3m) long Deinonychus (terrible-claw) was none the less a most impressive Late Cretaceous, North American predator. Armed with long grasping, clawed fingers and a 5-inch (13cm) long sickle-claw on each foot it was quite capable of taking on much larger prey, especially as fossil evidence suggests that it hunted in packs. DICRAEOSAURUS
This medium sized Sauropod from the Late Jurassic of East Africa is noted for the very deep neural spines of the vertebrae giving a somewhat humped appearance. Here we see a herd wandering through open conifer woodland with an understory of cycads and a few strap-like ferns. DIPLODOCUS BEACH
Although there is a great deal of evidence in fossil track-ways that sauropods travelled in herds but here we see a solitary Diplodocus (double-beam) ambling along a beach in the early morning some time in the Late Jurassic of what will become North America. As the sun warms the air the sea mist is burning off to reveal the great coniferous forests beyond. DIPLODOCUS SHADOWS
A herd of Diplodocus travel through a clearing in the forest, the ground is clear of vegetation possibly caused by many generations of sauropod feet. The Late Jurassic of North America must have been a very green and luxuriant land as there were several species of sauropod sharing this habitat along with other smaller herbivores. EDMONTOSAURUS HEAD
This portrait of Edmontosaurus (Edmonton-reptile) shows the horny beak that would have been used to collect the vegetation on which it lived; what can’t be seen are the hundreds of teeth set further back inside the mouth where the food was ground down. EDMONTOSAURUS LIGHTNING
A Late Cretaceous thunderstorm panics a herd of Edmontosaurus (Edmonton-reptile). This is one of the Dinosaurs for which we have mummified specimens showing that, at least this species of Hadrosaur had a frill along its back. HYPSILOPHODON
A group of small but swift Hypsilophodon (high-ridge-tooth) cross a shallow river in what will become Western Europe. These Early Cretaceous herbivores may well have lived in herds as over twenty separate individuals have been found at the same cliff site on the Isle of Wight, England. KENTROSAURUS
Closely related to the more famous Stegosaurus (roof-lizard), Kentrosaurus (spiky-lizard) is from the late Jurassic of Tanzania. Apart from being smaller Kentrosaurus also differed from Stegosaurus by having rear spikes instead of plates, with a spike projecting from each shoulder. This solitary specimen is seen taking a drink from a forest river. Trees are mainly the Monkey-puzzle family (Araucariaceae) with a large Ginkgo to the right. The understory is made up of tree ferns, Bennettitales and cycads and a floor cover of ferns with horsetails at the edges of the water. LIOPLEURODON AND PREY
Having eaten its fill of an Ichthyosaur, Liopleurodon (smooth-side-teeth) returns to the murky deep. Recent studies have suggested that the four flipper Plesiosaurs would have had a surprisingly fast acceleration and may well have been ambush hunters. Much like modern Great White Sharks they may well have lurked in the depths and with a sudden rush attacked their prey from below. LIOPLEURODON TEETH
Just as the Pterosaurs are not ‘flying Dinosaurs’, Plesiosaurs and the other marine reptiles are not ‘swimming Dinosaurs’. One of the short-necked Plesiosaurs, or Pliosaurs, Liopleurodon had a skull length of some 5 feet (1.5m) and an overall length in excess of 33 feet (10m). With those huge jaws and long teeth Liopleurodon would have been one of the top predators in the Late Jurassic oceans that covered much of Europe at that time. PALAEOSANIWA AND ORNITHOMIMUS
The Hell Creek Formation in western N. America contains some of the most famous of all Dinosaur Fossils, such as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, but many other types of animal lived there as well as other species of Dinosaurs. Here we see a small herd of Ornithomimus (bird-mimic) surprised by a large lizard, Palaeosaniwa, (ancient-saniwa) leaping up from its lair. The flora was made up of sparse large trees similar to Elms, Beech, Sycamore and Chestnut, smaller trees related to Magnolia, Witch Hazel and fruit trees, shrubs similar to Buckthorn and plants of the ginger and nettle families. TYRANNOSAURUS REX AND REGINA
A Tyrannosaurus (tyrant-lizard) pair meet on the banks of a late Cretaceous river in what is now western North America. There are indications that their meetings may not have been very cordial as some fossil evidence shows injuries that may have been caused by another member of the same species. We can imagine that, much like many modern predators, courtship could be traumatic.
