His paintings of aircraft led him to join the Guild of Aviation Artists. In his first year he won the Arthur Gibson Memorial Trophy for best painting by an artist exhibiting for the first time at the Guilds annual show in the Mall Galleries. He has since become an Associate member (AGAvA) and continues to successfully show at the Guilds Annual exhibitions. Although his main interest is World War One aircraft he isn't restricted to that one time period and is happy to paint other periods when he is taken by a particular subject or event.

Rutland at Jutland 1916
Winner 2016 Cross and Cockade International 'Best World War One Aviation Painting in Show’ at the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition held at the Mall Galleries ,London. Flying in Short 184 8359 Lieutenant F. J. Rutland with Assistant Paymaster G. S. Trewin make the first airplane reconnaissance of an enemy fleet during the opening sequences of the Battle of Jutland. The initial report was the sighting of three German cruisers and five destroyers. After a few more reports were made a ruptured fuel line caused a forced landing on the sea where Rutland was able to make repairs. However, due to the heavy swell he was ordered to taxi back to their mother ship the seaplane carrier H.M.S.Engadine. During the flight they had been subjected to heavy anti-aircraft fire. For this action Rutland was awarded his first Distinguished Service Cross, he was to receive a second the following year. Rise and Shine HMS Ark Royal
In the early morning light, one of H.M.S. Ark Royal’s Short 166 seaplanes takes off from Kephalo Bay, Imbros. The second of five Ark Royals, she was the first to carry aircraft. She spent most of the First World War in the Mediterranean supporting the campaigns in Gallipolli and Salonika as well as acting as depot ship for aircraft flying anti-submarine patrols. The Short 166 main difference from its slightly bigger brother the Short 184 was the use of the Salmson Canton-Unne radial engine, the 184’s using a variety of inline engines. James and the Whale
James McCudden made his fifth of fifty-seven confirmed claims on February 15th 1917 after bringing down a Roland CII Walfisch (whale) near Monchy while flying a DH2. Later that day McCudden’s C.O. led a flight of six aircraft to the wreck site and in turn each pilot fired three drums of Lewis machine gun ammunition into the remains of the Roland for gunnery practice. Albert and the Whale
During the summer and autumn of 1916 Albert Ball seems to have developed a personal grievance against Roland aircraft claiming seventeen between July 2nd and September 30th, in most cases specifying the CII Walfisch (whale). His mount was the Nieuport 17 armed with an over wing Lewis machine gun. He flew mainly in two aircraft, number A201 and then A213, as seen here, which had a red spinner added to the Nieuport’s propeller boss. Far Aft and Faintly
These three paintings were created for author Mark Klimaszewski. His stories envisage the Royal Netherlands Navy having a much larger role in the Pacific in the lead up to and during World War 2. Most of the aircraft and ships are based on real equipment but colour schemes have been changed to suit the stories. The major additions are the three big carriers that are Mark's creations, two are based on British WW1 Battlecruisers and the other on the Battleship H.M.S. Agincourt. The first painting shows a Grumman F3F and two Curtiss SBC3 dive bombers flying over a Battlecruiser-carrier with its DeRuyter class cruiser escorts. The second picture is of the Battleship-carrier, 'Schoonveldt' with a Tromp class cruiser escort, as a squadron of Hawker Furies fly past. The final painting shows PZL 23 'Karas' dive bombing squadrons attacking two Imperial Japanese dreadnought battleships, which have been escorting a merchant convoy. Boelcke Takes Off With Nurse Blanka
The emerging fighter ace Leutnant Oswald Boelcke takes nurse Blanka for a pleasure flight in his Fokker E1. Shipshape and Bristol Fashion
On 3 November 1915 the first land plane to be flown from an aircraft carrier, was Bristol Scout C 1255 piloted by Flight Lieutenant H.F. Towler RNAS. He took to the air from the flying off platform built onto the bows of the seaplane carrier HMS Vindex. HMS Vindex was converted from the Isle of Man Steam Packet, Viking. Empress at Stavros 1916
HMS empress a former L&SWR cross channel steamer, converted to a seaplane carrier, received three Short 166’s including two built by Westland’s (9754 and 9755) in October 1916. They were used for anti-submarine patrols in the north Aegean, 9754 being replaced by another Westland built 166 (9758) in November. By January 1917 these had all been transferred elsewhere in the Mediterranean. One of four of James' paintings included in 'The Art of Flight' celebrating 100 years of Westland built aircraft. Wagtail v Snail v Wasps
The Westland Wagtail was designed during the First World War as a ‘fighter’ with the ABC Wasp seven cylinder 170hp engine as its power plant. During 1918 the Wagtail was sent to Martlesham Heath for fighter trials along with the Sopwith Snail also fitted with the Wasp. Unfortunately the Wasp was not a successful engine hence the title of the painting as the aircraft were not only competing with each other but with their engines. With the close of the War new military aircraft were deemed unnecessary and the type faded away. One of four of James' paintings included in 'The Art of Flight' celebrating 100 years of Westland built aircraft. Weasel v Badger v Dragonfly
In a very similar scenario to the Westland Wagtail with its ABC Wasp engine, the Westland Weasel was defeated by its ABC Dragonfly nine cylinder 350hp engine. The Weasel was a two seat fighter type designed to succeed the Bristol F2b Fighter at the end of the First World War, however the failure of the power plant and the ending of the war meant further development was very limited. The Weasel along with the Bristol Badger and Austin Greyhound would have struggled to show their potential in fighter trials when so badly handicapped by their engines. One of four of James' paintings included in 'The Art of Flight' celebrating 100 years of Westland built aircraft. 263 Squadron Rhubarb 19-10-43
The Westland Whirlwind was designed as a twin engine fighter but was more successfully used as a fighter bomber, colloquially known as the ‘Whirlibomber’. In this guise they participated in many ‘rhubarb’ operations, attacking targets of opportunity such as shipping, aerodromes bridges and, as in the painting, locomotives. This particular ‘rhubarb’ was conducted by two pilots of 263 Squadron, namely Flight Sergeants Proctor and Dunlop flying from Warmwell. In the painting I have tried to include the main action with Red 1 flying over the two steam shrouded locomotives and Red 2 being hit by flak in the wing. Needless to say the train crews would have taken cover and we can see one pair hiding behind the hut by the signal gantry. One of four of James' paintings included in 'The Art of Flight' celebrating 100 years of Westland built aircraft. CAUGHT ON THE WATER
In ‘The Spiders Web’ Squadron Leader T D Hallam describes an occasion when two of Felixstowes flying boats came across a flight of five German seaplanes on the sea. As the enemy planes scrambled to take off they dived into the attack destroying one two-seater and forcing a single-seater to land on the water. The remaining seaplanes were all forced to withdraw as best they could. MEDIUM: Gouache on 140lb hp paper ORIGINAL PAINTING: £180.00 SOLD GICLEE PRINTS are available in various sizes. HARVEY-KELLY FIRST AERIAL VICTORY
Having been the first to fly an aeroplane to war for Britain Lieutenant H. D. Harvey-Kelly was involved in the first recorded aerial victory for the Royal Flying Corps on 25th August 1914. Seeing an Rumpler 'Taube' whilst flying with two companions of 2 Squadron RFC, Harvey-Kelly dived on the tail of the enemy aircraft. The terrified German pilot tried to escape the whirling blades of Harvey-Kelly's BE2b. The two other British pilots joined in the game 'boxing in' the hapless German who had no other choice but to land in the nearest field. Before the 'Taube' came to a complete halt the German pilot was out of the cockpit and disappeared into a nearby wood. During the whole engagement not a single shot was fired as none of the 'combatants' was armed! ALMOST ENDED BEFORE IT BEGAN
Awarded the Arthur Gibson Memorial Trophy at GAvA Annual Exhibition 2011 Count Von Holck and Manfred Frieherr von Richthofen. Even before he had learnt to become a pilot Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, had several close brushes with death. As an Observer, with von Holck as his Pilot, they had rashly decided to fly through the towering column of smoke rising from the burning town of Wicznice. Holck lost control but eventually managed to clear the smoke. With the engine failing they were forced to land not knowing on which side of the lines they were. Fortunately for them the first soldiers to appear were Prussian Grenadier Guards. 'BIG E'S' 'FLYING BARRELS'
Red section of fighter squadron VF-6 flies past their mother ship, the USS Enterprise (CV-6), nicknamed the 'Big E', in the late 1930s. The last of the US Navy's biplane fighters, the Grumman F3F, 'flying barrel', was a direct descendant of the F2F with longer fuselage and larger wings. The F3F-2 was designed as a stop gap until the F4F Wildcat monoplane could be developed. The F3F-2 had a more powerful engine and a three bladed propeller replacing the two bladed one of the F3F-1. FIRST LADY TO FLY THE CHANNEL
Harriet Quimby was the first woman to pilot an aeroplane across the English Channel on the 16th April 1912. Her successful flight was completely overshadowed by the tragedy of the Titanic sinking the day before. She was a journalist and film screenwriter as well as being the first certified female pilot in America. Her image in the distinctive purple fight suit she wore was used for advertising 'Vin Fiz' grape soda. Her success was short lived as Harriet was killed in a flying accident in Boston harbour in July that same year. The painting shows her early in the flight passing Dover Castle before heading across to France where she landed on Hardelot Plage after a 59 minute flight. Whilst she had learned to fly in a Bleriot XI, the Channel crossing was the only time she flew this particular aeroplane. FURIOUS PUP
HMS Furious was laid down as a battlecruiser but was completed as Britain's first designated Aircraft Carrier. Originally built with only a forward flight deck, Sopwith Pups were taken on board for flying trials. While take off was a relatively easy operation landing was an entirely different matter as the aircraft had to manoeuvre around the superstructure. After two successful landings were made by Squadron Commander Dunning, the third attempt ended in disaster and Dunning was drowned. As a result Furious was returned to the dockyard for a second, aft flight deck to be installed. The painting shows Furious as built with one of her pilots in Sopwith Pup N6454 contemplating the problem. FURIOUS CAMELS
Highly Commended by Cross and Cockade International at the 2013 GAvA annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries, London After the second Flight deck was added, which failed to solve the problem of landing on board, HMS Furious was used for anti-Zeppelin work in the North Sea. In July1918 seven Sopwith Camels took off from Furious in the early hours to bomb theZeppelin sheds at Tondern with some success as two Zeppelins were destroyed, but one pilot was lost. The painting shows three of the Tondern Raid Sopwith 2F1 Camels flying over HMS Furious, the nearest was flown by Captain B A Smart. The 2F1 variant of the famous Sopwith Camel had a slightly shorter wingspan, one of the Vickers machine guns replaced by an over wing Lewis but most significantly was the fuselage behind the cockpit which was detachable and contained flotation gear. Furious Gladiators
Between the wars HMS Furious was rebuilt with a flush flight deck which removed the problem of landing in the turbulence of the superstructure. Shortly before the outbreak of WW2 she was given an island superstructure to starboard. Early in the war Furious was involved in various North Atlantic and North Sea actions including the Norwegian campaign. As part of this campaign Furious carried Sea Gladiators of 804 Squadron for protection. Here we see three of these aircraft on patrol over the mother ship. The Sea Gladiator was similar to the land based version with arrestor hook and stowage for dinghies. FURIOUS SWORDFISH
For most of the World War 2 the Fairey Swordfish was the standard British carrier-borne torpedo bomber even outlasting its replacement. Various Swordfish squadrons were carried by HMS Furious during the War either as attack aircraft, ship protection or whilst being ferried to other theatres. This single Swordfish is flying over Furious in one of several camouflage patterns she carried during the war. JOHN PELHAM BURN 'WATERSKIING'
John Pelham Burn was for many years a 'crop sprayer' mainly in Britain but also in the Sudan which is where this painting is set. He is flying a Grumman Agcat while his friend flies as 'wingman' in a Cessna Agtruck. The long months of relentless crop work were only relieved by the occasional 'water-skiing' session or flying under bridges, both of which were severely frowned upon by the local authorities. Later John took to multi-engine freight aircraft, firstly propeller driven and later jets, which he continued to do until his final illness ended his career and his passion. LUCKY TO HAVE SURVIVED THE RED BARON
Frederick James Kirkham. Having survived von Richthofen’s attack on his BE2e and the subsequent crash, Observer 2/lt Frederick Kirkham and pilot, Reginald Follit, were cut from the wreckage by German troops. They were taken to a dressing station where Kirkham’s wounds were treated and where Follit died. Kirkham was marched into captivity; along the way several French girls walked beside Kirkham giving him cigarettes and talking to him, eventually being chased away by the guarding Uhlan. Kirkam spent the rest of the war in a POW camp. MEDIUM: Gouache on watercolour paper ORIGINAL PAINTING: £200.00 SIZE: 430x340mm (17x13ins) GICLEE PRINTS: Not available |

SUNDERLAND 'RESCUE'
The crew of one Sunderland is rescued by a second. The Short Sunderland was never intended for landing or take off on rough seas or even ocean swells, however many pilots took the risk in an attempt to save the lives of those adrift at sea. While on many occasions the operation was successful it is sad to record that many Sunderlands and their crews were lost in the attempt.
