'BIG E'S' 'FLYING BARRELS'

Red section of fighter squadron VF-6 flies past their mother ship, the USS Enterprise (CV-6), nicknamed the 'Big E', in the late 1930s. The last of the US Navy's biplane fighters, the Grumman F3F, 'flying barrel', was a direct descendant of the F2F with longer fuselage and larger wings. The F3F-2 was designed as a stop gap until the F4F Wildcat monoplane could be developed. The F3F-2 had a more powerful engine and a three bladed propeller replacing the two bladed one of the F3F-1.
